When you talk about local boxing in Rhode Island, you invariably start naming guys like Peter Manfredo jr., Jason Estrada, and Matt Godfrey. Another name to add to the list pretty soon will be
Demetrius Andrade. Andrade recently lost his gold medal bout in the Bejing Olympics to South Korean Kim Jung-Joo. That loss, although disappointing, can't really be counted when you talk about how Andrade will do as a pro. The amateur scoring system is a joke. The fact is, you can't really know how Andrade will do in his pro career based on his amateur success. There's a difference between an amateur flicking jabs for points and a professional willing to take three punches for the chance to connect one powerful right cross to the chin. You also have to take into account the added rounds and the subtraction of head gear and you don't know how an amateur will handle the jump to the pro ranks. All that aside, people who know a heck of alot more than I do think that Demetrius Andrade will be something special.
